Depending on the severity of your periodontal disease, scaling and root planning may be the recommended therapy for treatment.
Scaling and root planning is performed in office by the hygienist. The affected areas will be numbed with local anesthetic and the hygienist will do a deep cleaning using ultrasonic and hand scalars to get the plaque and calculus (tartar) off the teeth, roots and within any periodontal pockets, working beneath the gum line as required. This deep cleaning will result in removing the bacteria and providing a healthy environment where gum tissue can reattach, minimizing your pocket depth. This procedure is done in conjunction with the patient using a prescription rinse at home to help keep the bacteria down during the healing phase. Periodontal scaling and improved home care on the part of the patient will generally provide positive and tangible results, monitored by the hygienist at a six week visit. Another periodontal evaluation will be done to measure the improvements and the patient will be seen thereafter on a 3 month basis for periodontal maintenance.
